How Mosquito Misting Systems Work

Mosquitoes are super annoying, to say the least. They can ruin a beautiful day outside with their incessant biting, and also pose some very real health risks. In recent years, mosquito-borne diseases like Zika and West Nile virus have raised concern, making it more important than ever to keep these pesky insects at bay. Mosquito misting systems have surged in popularity as an effective way of keeping mosquitoes out of your home, but many homeowners still haven’t heard about this relatively new technology.

What is a mosquito misting system?

Originally designed to protect livestock on commercial farms, mosquito misting systems are installed as a permanent pest control solution. The system consists of 2 parts 1) a 55-gallon barrel that holds the chemical solution and machine unit and 2) a circuit of misting nozzles installed around the perimeter of your yard.

How do mosquito misting systems work?

The nozzles are strategically placed around your property, typically 8-10 feet apart along the fence line and the eaves of the house.

The system is electronically programmed to dispense the solution at fixed intervals, 2-3 times each day. We program the machine to mist when mosquitoes are most active, which is at dawn and dusk. The system works silently, releasing a fine mist in the targeted areas, killing mosquitoes on contact.

The mist is made of a mix of water and pyrethrin insecticide solution. Pyrethrins affect the mosquitoes nervous system, which quickly leads to paralysis and ultimately their death.

The spray times, spray duration, and chemical concentration can be adjusted to fine tune your system to your environment’s unique mosquito population. For instance, homeowners who live near a bayou or along the coast may need additional spray times to combat a denser mosquito population.

What are the benefits of a mosquito misting system?

With a mosquito misting system, you literally set it and forget it. You never have to remember to apply sticky repellent, light smelly candles or dangerous tiki torches, repurchase ineffective bracelets or stickers, and best of all – you won’t have a ton of mosquito bites to slather anti-itch ointment on at the end of an evening spent outside. Apart from giving you continuous mosquito control, there are several other benefits to using a mosquito misting system.

You can host a spontaneous dinner outside with friends without uninvited guests.

You can welcome neighbors for a pool party without their kids coming home with huge welts.

You can show off your BBQ skills without constantly swatting away annoying mosquitoes.

Your pets can go potty outside without being attacked by tiny blood-sucking vampires.

You can bring the groceries inside with both hands, not having to swat bugs away from your face.

While the system’s chemical and setting are targeted for mosquito control, it also affects other small flying insects like flies, midges, and ticks. You know those disgusting “clouds” of tiny gnats that block your sidewalk every summer? Gone.

Lastly, installing a mosquito misting system is an easy way to add to your overall property value and serve as an investment in your home’s outdoor space.
